How do you choose the perfect gate for your home?
What does a driveway gate mean to you, and how do you go about creating the perfect entrance to your home?
A new gate gives a sense of pride about the home you’re building, it creates an impression, offers security, and allows you to completely change the look and feel of your property.
With all this comes the pressure of choosing a gate that’s right for you, the right material, design, colour, additional features. It’s not easy!
Now this article isn’t here to tell you what’s wrong about other materials, it isn’t written to create more questions or to confuse. This article will show that choosing the right gate doesn’t need to be difficult, it tells you the right questions to ask, shows you the options you have, some of which you may not even know, and to help you get closer to the gate that you want. It will show the options available when looking at aluminium as an option and why choosing aluminium has become so popular in recent years.
As we like to say, your home, your gate, your choice!
We live in a digital age, an age where everything is available at the click of a button, and one where everyone needs everything yesterday and at half the price. When helping you choose a gate, we make it easy, but if you’re investing in a project like a new gate, you need to know what’s possible and what can’t be done, and have someone there to talk to. The last 18 months has seen a renewed interest in the investment in our own homes, and the role of gates in these projects has taken center stage!
Luckily, with modern day access control systems, some brilliant automation kits available, and high quality installers to do the job, things are a little easier, but there are still questions you need answering, and without the right guidance it’s easy to go down the rabbit hole and lose yourself in the maze of options and possibilities.
Traditionally a salesperson will wait until the last minute to mention price, all the benefits are discussed, why you should choose a product, and why they are the best. It’s the elephant in the room, something both client and supplier dance around until the last minute.
“That’s a bit expensive” or “I was expecting cheaper”
You want to know how much something is, right? You want to know what you are getting for your hard earned cash?
Sorry to disappoint, aluminium isn’t cheap, and if you’re looking for a ‘cheap’ gate then turn away now, aluminium probably isn’t the way to go. We’re not saying you have to take out a second mortgage to get one, but what you’re getting is a premium product, a quality product manufactured from a quality material. Comparing aluminium to other materials directly in terms of price is like comparing apples with oranges, it’s a different product entirely, a different gate entirely, and if you’re investing in a new gate you want quality, don’t you?
Aluminium, although light is very strong and very durable, and offers a low maintenance option that requires no ongoing treatment. Aluminium is also non corrosive meaning you don’t have any issues with rust. No maintenance isn’t just a tag line, it’s a huge benefit of a gate constructed from this amazing material.
So when choosing a material always ask about the costs of ongoing treatment, you may find that an aluminium gate may cost a little bit more, but in the long run you’ll have a gate that costs less.
What colour and finish can you have?
With aluminium the options are near endless. Each manufacturer and supplier would explain the options to you, each will have different options, different restrictions on their own range, but using TFS Direct as an example, if you have a RAL colour you want, then it can be done, with each colour available in a gloss, matte or textured finish.
Like the look of wood but sold on the idea of aluminium? Perfect!
Aluminium is available in a range of wood grain finishes. Take a look at the picture below showing a comparison of timber and a wood grain finish? Can you spot which is which?
How strong is aluminium?
In terms of weight aluminium is about a third of the weight and can be forged stronger than steel. Now it wouldn’t be right to say that aluminium gates are stronger than steel gates, but the key point to make is that light doesn’t mean weak. It’s all about what material is best suited to your own application, and one of the reasons why aluminium is a great option for driveway and side gates. If you were securing the perimeter of a data center would you choose aluminium? Probably not.
Our own aluminium gates can be manufactured with thicker and thinner profiles. A thicker profile would come at a higher cost, but it really comes down to more material equals more cost, and with both thickness of gates providing a quality finish, would you rather a more heavy duty gate?
What choice of design do I have?
This will always depend on the choice of supplier or manufacturer. The number of designs are vast with some manufacturers offering more bespoke gates and some dealing more in standard sizes and designs. For some ideas of different designs our gallery shows some of the most recent installations that have been sent in by our customers.
What size can i have?
The majority of projects we deal with are bespoke sizes, and with it being near impossible to put every type of gate size on a website, i often speak to clients who aren’t aware that gates can be measured to specific sizes. As with the majority of aluminium gate manufacturers and suppliers, we can have the gates manufactured to the size you need.
The key with all of these points is to ask, to speak to the company you deal with. There is no such thing as a stupid question, especially when it comes to an investment such as a gate.
Creating your perfect home is a long term project, and one of the first thing that people see when they get to your home is the driveway, the entrance, the gate!
Make it a good one!
